Facebook is advancing again! Today October 3, 2016 Facebook introduced Facebook Marketplace. Facebook stated:

“To help people make more of these connections, today we’re introducing Marketplace, a convenient destination to discover, buy and sell items with people in your community. Marketplace makes it easy to find new things you’ll love, and find a new home for the things you’re ready part with. We’ll continue to build new options and features to make this the best experience for people.”

Essentially it’s craigslist on facebook. People have been buying and selling on facebook for years in “tag sale” groups and selling on their personal pages. Now facebook is making it more official with Facebook Marketplace.

To get on Facebook Marketplace just click the storefront icon. Then you can scroll through what people are selling locally. If you’re looking for something specific there is a filter so you find exactly a what you are looking for. It’s perfect for people looking to get something cheaper and fast since the items are local.

Selling an item in Marketplace is just as easy as browsing for one. Simply:

  • Take a photo of your item, or add it from your camera roll
  • Enter a product name, description and price
  • Confirm your location and select a category
  • Post

Facebook Marketplace can make a huge splash in the local community by getting local businesses to post their items on the marketplace. It can help local business grow and get people to buy from local businesses which is always good. It could help locals connect with businesses that didn’t even know about. It will be very interesting to see how this will play out.
